Tris Dixon's previous book, "The Road to Nowhere: A Journey Through to Boxing's Wastelands," was so riveting that I bought his newest book as soon as it was available. I think this book is even better than "Road to Nowhere." Dixon's latest book is a stark and honest look at brain damage/CTE among boxers.Almost everyone who is a boxing fan knows the sad stories of guys like Muhammad Ali, Jerry Quarry and Wilfred Benitez. Many fans also know the tales of old-time fighters like Battling Nelson and Ad Wolgast. But those familiar tragedies merely scratch the surface in Dixon's latest book. Dixon details the struggles of so many fighters I never knew suffered from CTE after their career ended, and even as their career was still in progress. In addition to talking with dozens of fighters, Dixon also talked with numerous trainers and neurologists for the book.Two items really stood out to me in the book: Aaron Pryor's widow (Frankie) is quoted in the book as saying she does not know even one former boxer over age 50 or even one former world champion who is not struggling with CTE. In addition, Nigel Collins, former editor of "The Ring," is quoted as saying at least 75-80 percent of boxers suffer brain damage in the sport.Fans of the sport have always known that brain damage is an occupational hazard of boxing, but Dixon book goes far, far beyond the familiar tale of Muhammad Ali. While I will probably always be a fan of boxing, Dixon's book really is eye opening in detailing how much the sport extracts from its competitors.
